I'm learning so much this year. When we add more square foot gardens, I hope to be able to have enough to can and preserve. At this point we are happy with our daily supply.
The cucumbers seem to grow pretty slow. We have maybe one per week. It seems as if they're not getting pollinated as some cucumbers will begin growing but then shrivel up and go brown. Does anyone know if this could be why? What else could I plant to attract more bees?
We've had some green chilli that I need to roast and use
We've had red cherry peppers here and there. Next year I won't bother with them, they're too small and not worth the four squares, in my opinion.
I love seeing the zucchini's sprawl and the vine tomatoes going wild. This week I strung the vines to the roof of our patio! I've cut them and will stop their growth there as I really don't want to climb to the roof to get tomatoes.
Our cantaloupes stopped growing, turned orange & then dropped from the vine. We got 3 tiny cantaloupes & no more in sight. I'm thinking I didn't keep it wet enough and it may have appreciated a little more shade as the leaves look pretty dry.
This little one fit in our snack bowls. They were very sweet and delicious though! I think I'll be adding some potatoes to that barrel for Fall!
My square foot garden marigold is even more giant now. This picture was taken last week.
And this is one of the marigolds grown in the ground and recently transplanted. It's maybe a quarter of the size of the other. This is why I will be converting our amended soil, in ground bed to a square foot garden! I think I'll leave the weed cloth off the bottom so I can grow some root veggies there. I can't wait for our Fall garden. I've never grown greens, potatoes or carrots. Can't wait!
We've been seeing quite a few of these butterflies around the yard. I haven't looked him up yet. They're much larger then the painted butterflies we saw so much of this Spring. They seem to love the Oleander flowers.
& the garden is still Kiki's favorite place to be. This little garden has brought us so much joy.
What are the sights around your garden?

Hi Becca! Things look absolutely fabulous in your garden! I didn't notice this before, but I really like how you have created little brick borders around the beds and set your boxes into them. It's really cute! I'm sorry your cantaloupes fell off the plant, but your cantaloupe in the snack bowl is darling! I love it - so perfectly tiny! I'm sure you will have a terrific fall and even winter! Hardy greens - kale/collards probably grow year round. Best, Rachel
ReplyDeleteThank you! The borders are to keep out the invasive bermuda grass. It's a battle! It is kind of pretty though sometimes a tripping hazard!
DeleteHi Becca!
ReplyDeleteLove seeing your garden updates, I'm so glad that it's going so well. I always hate to see gardeners give up after 1 or 2 years. There are so many factors that can change year to year so I always say Never Give Up! ;o)
You will love the potatoes in the barrel, they are so easy and we didn't have any trouble with bugs. I recommend planting about 10 in an oak barrel, we yielded about 20lbs of potatoes although I had to harvest them before the rains came so if you can keep them in a bit longer then they'll get bigger.
Thanks for the update!
xoxo

Thanks for the tip! I wasn't sure how many potatoes to plant. Can't wait!
