Imagining Snakes & All manner of Bugs

Living mostly without TV has been easier than I thought and has made room for more arts & crafts activities to do together. Rather than feel like extra work these activities have just been naturally filling our days. We have been doing one or two art activities a day. This activity was really simple and fun. I bought a bag of plain wooden beads in different earth tones and we strung beads on hemp string. We made snakes, caterpillars, worms and all manner of bugs. We had a good time imagining what our creations were and how they interacted together. My son happens to love snakes and bugs so the idea was a big hit with him.

No creation was precious. They naturally went back to the basket for another day of creating. I didn't decide this ahead of time it just seemed to happen that way. Had he wanted to keep any of them I gladly would have knotted it up for him. A big factor in the success and enjoyment of the activities we've done has been my focused awareness in the project, something I've learned from Waldorf. I am there participating, enjoying Michael and the activity. Often I lose interest before he does and I go and do something else while he continues. Then usually afterward he's happy to run and play and imagine on his own for long stretches of time.

  1. That looks like an awesome project! Where did you get the beads? I think I know someone around here who might enjoy it as well.

  2. It is fun! I actually got the beads at dreaded Walmart but I've seen similar beads at Joanne Fabrics and I'm sure Hobby Lobby has them as well. I liked the size and shape variety in this bag.

  4. Thank you! He is enjoying our creative projects. I can see his behavior is very different on days we don't get to our projects together.
