Our Garden in August

Our garden is doing fairly well this year.  This is our first garden season at our new house and we're learning as we go.  At our old house we had a great set up, morning sun and shade in the afternoon.  It seemed to be the perfect recipe for tomatoes in the desert southwest.  Here our veggies are in the sun all day and toward the end of the afternoon they look tired, a little limp and sad.  I'm wondering if we should do shade cloth and if so how?

The purple sage is blooming and is such a beautiful backdrop.  Everything here seems to be happy except a few of the tomatoes in the back.

I planted green beans this past month and they look good.

Zucchini is starting to produce though not as much as last year at this time.  We have a watermelon growing in this patch as well as some sugar pie pumpkins.  The pumpkins may be producing just as the watermelons are ending.

Two watermelons are growing here in this bed.  Getting a yellow pear tomato here and there.  We have pumpkins started here as well. Our cucumbers are slow in production.

My Gramma's Morning Glories are beginning to climb!

Green peppers are starting to produce.  I'm happy about that!  Last year we couldn't get them to grow.

The most abundant crop in our yard is Purslane, an edible weed!  I didn't know what this was until this week when multiple friends posted about it on FB.  I've tried it in a smoothie, I can't recommend it. (It tastes very green.)  Then I tried some in a tofu stir fry and on homemade pesto pizza and it was fantastic!  A bit crunchy and yum!

Thinking some of my plants look magnesium deficient so trying some Epsom salt this evening.  Wish us luck!

Until next time...

  2. I'm so happy to see your garden doing so well! When you mentioned creating shade in your garden with shade cloth (I actually don't know what that is as we often long for sun around here!) but I immediately thought of hanging beautiful silks to shade the plants. They would add colour and the waldorf whimsy that we love so much!
    Enjoy your home grown foods!
