I've been playing with felting lately. I needle felted two pumpkins for our holiday decorations and then another couple for my shop. I think I have to make some more too, they're addicting!
Then I tried to wet felt the perfect red felt for some dolls. Sadly it ended up as prefelt. Not the most successful first try but it made some very pretty leaves, one is featured above.
Shhh, don't tell the boys, I'm working on their sugar fairy gift. I was super nervous to tackle this project. I'm very happy to say that it came out much better then my red felt, thanks to some great advice from fellow toy makers at Natural Kids. I plan to needle felt this into a log with two little owls to peer out. I'll show you photos as it progresses.
What autumn projects do you have going?
Until next time...

We made similar felt pumpkins too:)And now new gnomes came to our autumn meadow...
ReplyDeleteI like your log very much, it's very magical and forest:) And Pumpkin baby in your shop inspires me to new crafts.
Oh I can imagine the little owls peeking out, TOO cute! Can't wait to see the photos!
ReplyDeleteI've been readying our home for Hallowe'en. It's my least favourite holiday but I make an effort for the kids. ;o)
I did have a lot of fun turning our dollhouse into a "haunted" house though!

Beautiful job you've done on the felting!! Those pumpkins look so pretty - I love all the layered shades of orange and yellow. Can't wait to see what the Sugar Fairy brings. : )
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteLove your pumpkins! Also love your blog, and just stopped by your Etsy shop, and see that you offer darling items in your shop -but some have eyes, and some don't. Can you point me to a blog or book that explains why Waldorf toys have both types and/or which type is for what age?
I have 6 kids, oldest is 9, youngest is nearly 1, and we probably have missed the boat for Waldorf with our 3 older kids, but we are trying to become more of a natural, Waldorf inspired home now that our 4 yr old has started at a Waldorf based preschool. I am in the midst of trying to de-plastic our house, and I don't know how successful I will utimately be, but at least I feel like I'm taking steps toward a better, more mindful home for my family.
Thank you for providing me a good bit of inspiration to ponder - I cried at your nighttime ritual, going to try and copy you verbatim on that one! So much better than the frazzled "Pleeeeeeeeeeze stay in your bed(s) and go to sleep RIGHT NOW" ritual we've fallen into!
Thanks again!
welcome mamazakka! Thanks so much! Our night time ritual is still lovely, although we haven't done the candle in awhile. And please don't misunderstand, at that time of night sometimes there is still the "Pleeeeeeeeeeze stay in your bed(s) and go to sleep RIGHT NOW" kind of thing. I love it when my 3 year old drifts off while we read and then bed time is much more peaceful for us all. but sometimes he is wide awake and is jumping on the bed and not letting my eldest get to sleep. Such is parenthood, right?
DeleteAs for the faces. Waldorf likes simple faces or no face. The doll should be able to have the expression that the child imagines. So a simple or no face allows the child the freedom to imagine anything. I can't think of where to direct you to read about it at the moment but I'll think about where I've read it. I know Steiner talks about simple toys in one of his lectures. De-plastic-ing is great and even better- simplifying. Have you read Simplicity Parenting? So good and inspiring.
Thanks for your comment!
Becca
Ah, Simplicity Parenting - found the book, plus a blog! Thanks so much!!!
DeleteI need guidance, this is awesome! And your encouragment is even more appreciated, really, thank you.
I *have* read that about Waldorf toys, needing to be as simple as possible to allow the most freedom of imagination, but, it's begining to seem to me there are two distinct sides of this belief, one that believes 'no face' is best, and one that believes a 'simple face' is best. I was surprised you offered both! :D
Off to read how to simplify! (Yay!!!)
Yes, there may be 2 sides to the no face idea. I've always read minimal is best, so i try to keep it simple. I offer both at my shop because I love both. I love the simplicity of the no face and I love the little bit of personality to the simple eyes.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you found the book & blog. It's so inspiring! I have to simplify all over again. I find it's a continual thing, especially in a small space. Enjoy reading!
