Garden Bounty!

Our little garden has offered more than it's share of tomatoes.  We've had a daily supply. I cut up this batch to add to our freezer.

I can't really putter in my beloved garden anymore.  My favorite activity, puttering, lol.  The path into the garden is completely blocked by the 2 zucchini plants we have growing here.  It's magical to me that these giants came from 2 tiny little seeds.

This fence on the left was meant to keep the youngest of our clan from running through here and picking whatever he likes.  However, I think we may need to remove it.  I would love to have an arbor there and maybe a door that we can close if needed.  Owen is starting to understand what can be picked and what isn't ready.  Still, when we have friends over it becomes a challenge to keep their little hands from picking.  We shall see.

The marigolds are giant.  I need to look up how to use them in dyeing. I would love to try to dye some Michaelmas capes with them.

We have sage and basil drying in the kitchen.  It makes it feel more like harvest season in the house.  Even though it is still terribly hot out.  I do feel Autumn coming though.  The mornings and evenings are a bit cooler.  I can hardly wait to feel less stuck in the house!

I had wanted to have a Fall garden, but where to put it?  Production seems to be slowing down but hasn't stopped yet.  I had one square available so I planted lettuce.

I also have a little room in the palette.  I planted red sail lettuce & spinach.  Only the lettuce seems to be coming up.  I think if I shaded it they would have an easier time under our hot sun.   I'm tempted to pull out the cherry peppers in our square foot garden and add more lettuce and spinach there.  We haven't been impressed with them.  They produce slow, only about 2 cherry peppers every 2 weeks or so.  Plus the actual peppers are tiny of course.  I feel guilty pulling out perfectly good plants though.  Hmmm? How do you handle this summer/fall transition gardeners?  Are there plants you pull to make room? I would love to see your gardens, please link up in the comments.

Until next time...

  1. Hi Becca, I'm so glad your garden is doing SO well! Everything looks so lush and healthy.
I have had to pull out the kale due to caterpillars and the swiss chard due to it bolting. Lettuce and spinach always bolts for me in the summer if I don't plant it in the shade, do you plant a type that doesn't do that?
The everbearing strawberries are going to get pulled this year too which makes me a bit sad as I've had them (and their babies) for at least 15 years. We now have tons of the June bearing variety so I'm happy with those.
My last garden update was a couple of weeks ago http://madebyjoey.blogspot.ca/2012/08/a-quick-peak-in-garden.html
Autumn is in the air here too, I think the plants feel it too!
    xoxo
