Garden Update

Those who are following our garden updates might remember our grasshopper problem. Well, I implemented a few things, chile spray the plants, soap spray the grasshoppers & adding a bird bath.  I also put some bird seed down to attract the birds.  My "bird bath" is just a couple of things I already had, a tree stump & clay saucer.  The birds came for a few days but then were scared away by our cats.

I can't imagine why, can you?  No really, my plan was that the birds would visit in the morning because we keep our cats in until mid morning usually.  That didn't work, you can't schedule birds. They avoid us like the plague.

However, I soon found out that cats are a great deterrent for grasshoppers!  It seems cats love to catch and eat them.  I've been noticing our little Kiki especially favoring them as her little protein snack.  Hopefully she'll get them all before they completely destroy the sunflowers.  I do plan to buy some Dr. Bronners and revisit the soap spray idea. For now I put our coffee grounds behind the oleanders where they live & rely on the cats.  They seem to be dwindling a bit.

The tomatoes & peppers are staring to produce, though nothing ripe yet.

The pallet is happier now with pots on it.  It seems to keep the moisture level inside the pallet more equitable so the herbs planted inside have begun growing better.

I've been super impressed with our workaholic basil!  We've had at least 4 pestos from our one large plant.  So I planted a couple more seedlings.  I'd love to freeze some pesto this year.

The artichoke is recovering from its mysterious bug attack.  If it was a grasshopper attack, why don't they keep eating it?

And here's a cilantro that finally began growing! The sage is growing well here too.

Vine tomatoes & zucchini plants getting huge!

We've had 3 lovely zucchini's from our just starting to produce zucchini plants.

We've had just two cucumbers from our two cucumber plants, one each.   But I see we have a couple tiny ones here.

We were super impressed with the flavor & crunch to our cucumber.  I guess I've never had a truly fresh cucumber.  They are so crisp & yummy!  Here's Owen putting a hat on Mr. Cucumber.

My Mother has always said I have a weird decorating sense.  She laughs at my bowl of river rocks on the kitchen table.  How about vegetable paint color, Mom?  Wouldn't cucumber green be pretty on this wall?

And I think I'm most excted about my compost.  It seems to be working!  I'm using a 5 gallon bucket w/ drainage & air holes.  I already had to dump it out and let it dry once because of a putrid smell.  (Too many coffe grounds?)  And now it has a very pleasant smell & color.  Yay!

We're very happy with our small garden! & can't wait to expand!  A couple more square foot beds are in order for Fall.

How's your garden growing?  Linking up with Ginny from Small Things.

Until next time...

  1. i do love watching your garden grow. and it's looking great! i'm a wee bit envious of your beautiful zucchini as the rabbits ate any of the growth that has popped up thus far. it's funny how we are affected by different creatures in different parts of the world. i can't imagine a grasshopper problem here in Minneapolis!

    1. It is funny. I'm glad I don't have to worry about rabbits or deer but we do have our pests. The grasshoppers and children (though they are universal) lol.

  2. Nice to see your garden update. Cute pictures of the cat too, glad he is good at catching grasshoppers. I can't wait to add a few more square foot gardens to our side yard as well, my favorite way to garden! Your zucchini looks wonderful, ours are still very tiny, our summer needs to warm up a bit more. :)

  4. Your garden is so pleasant and sunny.
thank you for letting me walk it and for the nice things you said at my blog. :)
I know very little about growing artichokes.... but this I can say....sometimes when you get a plant past the baby stage it doesn't taste as good to your bugs (maybe better to others).... so perhaps it is just a matter of getting it further along and that is why they left it alone.
What a wonderful spot you have created for life.

    1. Thank you! Yes, the artichoke is much bigger now, that makes sense.

  5. Hi Becca! Thanks for your comment and for visiting my blog. Your garden looks great. In previous years, my zucchini plant had that silvery marking on its leaves. Not this year however. It doesn't seem to harm the plant but do you know what it is? I never could seem to find out. I love your pallet idea! And, even though I'm extremely allergic to cats (pooh!), I think it's so cool they're helping to control your grasshopper population!!!

    1. Thanks! I'm not sure if this is correct but I wonder of it may have something to do with sun/water damage? There are times if I don't water before 8am it's already too hot. I think a couple of times I accidentally watered the foliage. I usually try to water at the base, but alas sometimes my hose (or kids) have other plans. lol

  7. LOVE your garden space! So cute! How funny your cat in the birdbath :) I wonder if our cat would like squash bugs...hmm... I still can't get over seeing the tiny little veggies grow into real full size ones. Amazes me every year.

    1. I know what you mean. It's so awesome to see them grow. We just spotted some teeny tiny cantaloupes this week and, wow... to think they'll ever be big enough to eat?! So cool.

  11. So happy that you are starting to enjoy the rewards of all of your hard gardening work! Today I picked a bowl of strawberries and thought of you! ;o)
The peas are just starting now and we're using the herbs in our cooking. The kale is looking good though has a ways to go before harvesting.
