What we thought were moths were actually butterflies! Painted Lady Butterflies!
I'm so glad we kept them. We had three break out of their chrysalis, two fluttered off, one passed on & we are still waiting for nine more to break out. Both boys were fascinated with the whole process & Michael did some drawings of the process of metamorphosis. I couldn't have asked for a better "science class" this year.
We have a fun history with the Painted Lady Butterfly. It's the same butterfly that we let go at our wedding almost 14 years
ago! I released a butterfly for pictures and it landed on my hand and
stayed for an unusually long time. Then after our reception we
went to dinner with friends & as we were sitting on the 2nd story patio blocks & blocks from the hotel where we had our wedding, one of our butterflies fluttered by. My husband and I and all our friends had one of those,Wow kind of moments together. We all just sat there in awe. Anyway, I'm so happy our little chrysalises turned out to be The Painted Lady Butterfly.
Until next time...

That is so cool!!!
ReplyDeleteI used to work at a butterfly house and we imported painted ladies! (I suppose I should have recognized the chrysalis then?!) And you actually have them in your own backyard, that is neat! And what a great science project. We've never been able to keep the caterpillars alive to even make a chrysalis or cocoon!
I started making the Math Gnomes and so far have King Equals, Minus Subtraction and Plus Addition done. I can't wait to use them with the kids! Thank you again for the explanation.

Funny how the universe always ties things together isn't it? I wonder how many more times through your journey in life they will flutter by?
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic science lesson. Really it doesn't get any more organic than that!! I found a chrysalis on our garbage can a few years back. We watched and waited and it turned out to be a Monarch. Stunning!!
Enjoy your discoveries and thanks so much for sharing.
