Making our Garden Bed

Spring is in the air and in our area of the country that means it's getting hot during the day and windy.  High winds are not good for little seedlings.  We've been keeping them protected in our  sunny entry way.

We have been busy!  We've planted all kinds of herbs, zucchini, summer squash, beans, peas & some grass for the cats.

I ordered and received my Square Foot Gardening book and have been reading and planning away.

We made our square foot garden bed & I oiled the wood to protect it.

Dear husband added trellis for growing tomatoes & other vines.

I feel like we'll have some decent growing space, hopefully enough for our little family.  Under the carpet to the left is a small bed where I'll be planting tomatoes, basil & zucchini.  The square foot garden grows quite a bit of food all in a 4' x 4' foot space.  I can't wait to see it growing!

We laid down a thick weed cloth. Please ignore the weeds in the back!  That is our next project to tackle.

Michael helped me add the soil to our garden bed.

I ordered the square foot grid online and Michael helped me put it together.

We laid down the grid and added 1/2" PVC pipe tied at the top to form our shade structure.  This will be good for shade and with a clear tarp good for growing winter veggies as well.  Making the garden bed & structure was so easy and inexpensive! I would love to add another bed in the future and we're talking about making one with a bottom for a sand box as well.  Wouldn't this little pvc structure be fun to play in?  My boys both asked,  "Can't we play in it?!"

Right now I'm having to baby my little seedlings quite a bit.  We planted last night and have been hanging a sheet on the structure to shade the plants in the midday sun and at night from the wind.

We also planted our pallet with seeds.  I want to grow herbs here.  I think I may keep it on the ground rather than make it vertical.

If you want to learn more about square foot gardening, check out this website.  & Wish me luck!  If my seedlings survive the kids and cats and sun we'll be doing well.

Until next time...

  2. Yah! Congratulations, it looks awesome! I would think keeping everything watered enough will be your biggest challenge. The sun and wind will really dry out the top layer of soil and seedlings really don't like that! Moist soil will also deter the cats but I'm afraid it will probably encourage the kids! Just kidding, I bet your kids are just as eager as you to see the plants sprouting and becoming lush EDIBLE plants! ;o)

    1. Yes, watering is turning out to be my biggest challenge as you say. The seedlings have not been happy with our harsh sun so I'm shading them until they get a little stronger. I've put cardboard over the squares I've seeded. That should help until they sprout. I have many more squares to seed too. And tomatoes & peppers to buy plants for. Exciting, exciting! You've really inspired me with your perpetual lettuce in containers. I've missed the growing season here so will have to wait for a fall crop.

    2. Oh and if you can, pop in a few english cucumber plants to grow up a string tied from the eave above (you can see a photo in my Aug 2011 pickle post) They take up only a few inches of soil space and love the sun too! I can't wait to eat our own cucumbers again, the store bought ones are pitiful in comparison! You are so lucky, your growing season is at least 2 months ahead of us!

  4. Gardening as a family is so great isn't it :-) Can't wait to see all your veggies and herbs growing. My local gardening shop just sent out a flyer offering free pallets - and I thought of you! I'm thinking I might grab one to do a vertical succulent garden, so thanks for the inspiration (maybe on your Pinterest pages?)

And thanks for sharing on Happy Family Times x
