My First Yarn Along
This is my first yarn along with Ginny from, Small Things. I have been excited to get back to learning how to knit. My dear and only knitting friend has moved away, so I'm on my own. At this point I know how to make the longest scarf ever... and that's pretty much it. Last year I made a cowl each for my Mom and I for Christmas. And I've made dish rags. Beyond that, I'm stumped!
So recently I bought, A First Book of Knitting for Children by Bonnie Gosse & Jill Allerton. I also bought their second book called Knitting for Children. These books are wonderful inspiration and the instructions seem simple and clear.
My first project is a horse, from the first book. We shall see how it goes. Also I'm reading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, a Christmas present to myself. I found this beautiful copy at our local book store for a steal. I'm already hooked on it.
Everyone send me some knitting mojo please! Until next time...

Becca, I would love to sit down with you but I think we live too far apart. =) I think you will surprise yourself though at what you can learn. Videos can be helpful for learning techniques and ravelry is addictive for pattern searching. You certainly did find a beautiful book and if you haven't already read Louisa May Alcott books, beyond Little Women you are in for a treat. Enjoy your quiet time.
ReplyDeleteOh Becca learning to knit! How exciting but it can be overwhelming. Make sure to stop by knittinghelp.com if you need help. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to follow your knitting journey! I too can only knit scarves and dish cloths. Knit and purl are the only stitches I know and adding and subtracting stitches seems like magic at this point! I'm going to look for the books that you are using, I'd love to learn more!

Yeah for your 1st yarn along! I second knittinghelp.com - I find their videos very helpful when I get stumped. It's fun to learn little by little. Learn a new stitch or technique and then move onto something else. Those books look interesting and should help. And of course Jane Eyre is great. We've been watching a BBC version of this recently.
ReplyDeleteI am also a lone knitter since none of my close friends or family knit. Good luck! I recommend Knitted Animals once you finish your 1st two books. I knit my way through the whole book and by the end I knew almost every knitting technique!
ReplyDeleteHooray for knitting! I have only been knitting a lot in the past 2 years, and my best advice is to just go for it. Even if the pattern looks too hard, there are tons of resources on the internet or at your local yarn shop... and once you invest a bunch of time into a project, you will make yourself learn how to finish it! And, if some mistakes get made along the way... than so be it! Glad to follow you along your journey.
ReplyDeleteI wish we could all step in and knit with you, but alas, I live too far from you too. I will echo what others have said and encourage you to use video help online when I needed. I have learned a lot of techniques by googling the knitting term I need help with and finding a video I like. Do you have a local yarn shop where you can maybe get hooked up with other knitters? I only say that because I have found in my whopping 3 years of knitting, there is something wonderful about knitting with others. No matter what though, keep at it! Knitting is wonderful in so many ways.
