I've always told Michael he has my "chocolate" eyes. His eyes were one of the first things I noticed about him, after his gigantic feet. Not the color really, they were somewhere between blue/black and purple, a newborn alien eye look. What I remember most about the first time I looked into his eyes was the look of sheer astonishment.
As much as you prepare for having a baby, you still can't fully fathom what it will be like, at least we couldn't. I read a million books, watched videos of births, read a ton of birth stories online, took a birth class, but still, I remember the feeling of complete shock when I finally pushed him out. It seems funny to say that now. I mean I knew I was pregnant and I knew that the baby would have to be born. It just wasn't possible to fully grasp these facts. My husband seemed as shocked as I was. And Michael Gray had a look on his face like "I know you!" He was wide eyed and studied us intensely. It was as if having heard our voices all throughout pregnancy, he had put our voices, this bizarre, bright world and our faces together. He was as shocked to be here as we were to see him.
A picture can never fully express an experience. This is the closest we have.Michael Gray, studying our faces
